She leads them. She feeds them. She rests when she can. She protects them with everything she has. Being a bear mother is not for the faint of heart. She must feed herself and her cubs, building enough strength to survive the long, harsh winter—while every other bear competes for the same scarce resources. On top of that, male bears actively pose a deadly threat to her young. This Bear Mama had a litter two years ago, but none survived. This time, she has been remarkably diligent and cautious—ever watchful, always alert. At times she even sought the uneasy safety of staying close to humans when danger lurked. For better or worse, it has kept her cubs alive. And still, she persists.
